The Monocle Book of Italy - THAMES & HUDSON
The Monocle team celebrates the endlessly fascinating and culturally rich country of Italy

Italy feels comfortingly familiar for many. The very name conjures images of ruby red tomatoes, zippy Vespas and classical statues – yet beyond the clichés lies a complexity and variety that’s perpetually surprising. This is a place where laid-back living meets industrious craft, where well-heeled patrons tuck into simple dishes at rustic trattorie and where family, community and passion are the threads that lace it all together. For well over a decade Monocle has roamed the length of the boot – from the craggy peaks of the Dolomites to the azure waters of Sicily – and this is the result of their dedicated reporting. Join them as they throw down their towels at the best bagni, sit front row at dazzling runway shows, call in at vineyards, gelato spots and furniture fairs and maybe even hit a disco or two. Be prepared to see Italy through a whole new lens.

New Map France: Unforgettable Experiences for the Discerning Traveller - THAMES & HUDSON
Unforgettable Experiences for the Discerning Traveller
Herbert Ypma

The ultimate visual guide to to the finest hotels and experiences France has to offer.

Today’s discerning traveller is looking not merely for luxury but for a unique experience. But in this age of low-cost flights and easy travel, how do you avoid the crowds and find the hidden gems? Not via sponsored search results or thousands of indistinguishable reviews, that’s for sure. What you need is on-the-ground, in-person, tried-and-trusted knowledge.

In this new guide to France – the most visited country on the planet – Herbert Ypma surprises and delights with his unequalled eye for detail and his unerring ability to judge what makes the difference between a good experience and a truly memorable one. The numerous experiences and tips that he maps out across the length and breadth of France fall into four key categories. ‘Staying in Character’ presents thirty five places to stay, from the grand to the eccentric, all embodying the soul and character of their setting – whether it’s bedding down in a surf shack at Soulac-sur-Mer or soaking up centuries of history at the luxurious Château de Canisy. ‘Eclectic Experiences’ offers thirty stand-out experiences, from climbing the Dune de Pyla to salsa-dancing in a calanque (a fjord-like inlet); ‘Legend for Lunch’ points you in the direction of twenty of the most authentic places to eat, while ‘Convincing Context’ presents ten experiences enhanced by nuggets of history.

Together they amount to a new map of authentic French experiences, making this the must-have 21st-century guide for the world’s most exacting traveller.

Robert Fairer, Iain R Webb, André Leon Talley, Hamish Bowles, Oriole Cullen

A lavish, supersize publication dedicated exclusively to John Galliano's extraordinary creations for the house of Dior, captured by American Vogue's photographer Robert Fairer

As testified by the monumental success of the recent Dior retrospective curated by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, ‘Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams’, which attracted over 700,000 visitors over its extended run, John Galliano’s creations for the house of Dior have entered fashion history and are widely recognized as some of the most breathtaking and imaginative collections ever created. John Galliano for Dior is the first publication entirely dedicated to showcasing these unforgettable designs, which have become collectors’ items and form a key chapter of the history of the house of Dior – ‘the greatest house in the world’, as Galliano stated when he was first placed at its helm. ‘I see myself as a guardian of [Christian Dior’s] spirit, a keeper of his dreams,’ he added.

The book unfolds chronologically, revisiting the most iconic creations and revealing previously unseen behind-the-scenes moments that capture models, hairdressers, stylists, make-up artists and John Galliano himself at their most creative. Robert Fairer’s stunning and high-energy photographs convey the drama, glamour and wild imagination that defined Galliano’s Dior shows. Quinta Nova Reserva Blanc de Noir White 2022 - 75cl
We went to the highest slopes in the top of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo to pick the grapes that mature more slowly and maintain greater freshness and linearity, and to create a new wine: the Quinta Nova Blanc de Noir, a Reserva white wine made from red grapes.

The beautiful Tinta Roriz grapes are the first to enter our winery. We harvest them at their perfect maturation point, so that we can extract all the components that make this wine unique and sublime.

Delicate citrus aromas combined with white stone fruit support the complex and vibrant, enigmatic aroma. With remarkable firmness granted by the red grapes, this is a compact, fresh and tense wine, offering an endless finish with great precision, as a great wine should be.

Classicism combined with modern winemaking, this Reserve white wine from Quinta Nova is a thrilling wine that awakens all our senses.

Quinta Nova Centenaria Douro 2020 - 75cl
The first study for monovarietal planting in the Douro region was conducted in Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, between 1979 and 1981, in conjunction with the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture, through the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas do Douro (Douro Winemaking Studies Centre). In the study, the best solar exposures were chosen in Quinta Nova to study the planting of three grape varieties: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca.

The Parcela 29 (Plot), planted with Touriga Nacional, has 3300 vines, a slope of 20%, and an altitude between 170 and 205 metres. It represents a unique wine and a fundamental piece in the history of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in its maximum expression of terroir. A genuine Referência (reference) that combined with century-old vines, results in a wine with a very elegant profile, almost feminine, contrasting with an intense structure of juicy tannins of enormous precision. A schist texture of high gravity,
the savoury profile, and the purple colour reflects the nature of the Touriga Nacional variety.

Quinta Nova Reserve Terroir Red 75cl
This wine surprises us with its purity and sophistication. It results from a perfect combination of Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo’s main grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão - a beautiful composition that reflects the simplicity and transparency of our terroir.

The wine’s intense colour stimulates individual memories and transports us to the immense vineyard and rugged landscape of the Douro wine terraces. A broad journey of flavours is manifested through the density and strength of the pleasant and seductive aromas, with a more sophisticated side provided by the use of good French oak barrels. At the time of tasting it closes with a muscular structure and a juicy texture that intertwine with the body of the wine, providing for a tense, long and deep finish.

Quinta Nova Rose 2022 - 75cl
Rosé is an invitation to experience delightful flavours. Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Rosé stands out due to its high structure, in a slightly more aromatic version of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and delicate Tinta Francisca, positioning itself as wine at a very high level for great rosé lovers.

The grapes are pressed using the model executed in the French region of Provence, that uses the entire grape - the renowned blanc de noirs technique. Structured by low temperature fermentation (11-12ºC) in stainless steel vats for almost 3 weeks, part of the lot is then aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels.

It is a wine that is worth remembering because of its primary aromas, mineral texture and final tension that ensures a long finish and the certainty that we will want more next year.
