On a Summer Night
by Deborah Hopkinson, Kenard Pak (Illustrator)

Step into the quiet magic of this celebration of summer nighttime and the mystery of a world lit differently by the moon.

On a summer night, the world is still. Even the crickets think it’s too hot to sing. But all at once, a girl wakes. In the kitchen, the cat rolls onto its soft paws. A neighbor’s small white dog yaps, a brown rabbit peeks from a hedge, and the leaves of a cherry tree begin to stir in the breeze. Readers witness and Who has woken them all? In this soothing bedtime story, the quiet of a warm summer night is brought to vivid, magical life with the soft steps of bare feet, the padding of paws, and the bright, golden light of the moon. One by one, each creature is roused and then gently returned to sleep in a lovely and lyrical exploration of wakefulness, restfulness, and the mysterious calm of the night.

PERFECT FOR BEDTIME . . . OR This beautifully illustrated children's book is ideal for soothing young readers to sleep—or encouraging a contemplative break in an energetic day. The story’s engagement with the wonders of nighttime will help children feel comforted by the dark and the prospect of going to sleep rather than afraid of them.

READ-ALOUD With its lyricism and short refrains, this gentle story is just right for sharing.

CONNECTION TO This magical book gradually reveals the moon as a character as it wakes girl, cat, dog, rabbit, tree, air, and cloud in turn—and connects them to one another through the welcoming quiet and wonder of a world gilded by moonlight.

THE POWER OF SLOWING Picture books are often wonderful excuses to slow down and share a moment of gentleness in kids' (and parents') busy lives; this book feels like a deep breath and offers a chance to wonder and reflect.

"The history of space exploration is best presented in this book of NASA photographs, whose images are universally inspirational." - Commander James Lovell, Apollo 13

NASA has worked at the forefront of space exploration and research since 1958. Their devotion to furthering our understanding of what lies beyond our atmosphere has seen 12 humans walk on the surface of the moon, helped form the International Space Station, and placed numerous rovers on Mars. Voyager 1, launched by NASA on 5 September 1977, is the furthest manmade object from earth, having left our solar system entirely - and the agency's plans for the future are equally inspiring.

This book celebrates NASA throughout the years, from its inception to its 60th anniversary in 2018, and beyond. A visual tour-de-force, the book collects high resolution NASA photos of historic significance; from rarely seen photos and the words of President John F. Kennedy commanding the space race, to the many triumphs and tragedies of the Apollo Missions, moon landings, the International Space Station, space shuttles, journeys to Mars and explorations of our galaxy's outer reaches. These breathtaking images are complemented by heartfelt words of hopes and imagination for the future, encouraging readers to admire their world from a different perspective. NASA: the Greatest Milestones is a stunning 300 page book.

Paris Moderne: 1914-1945 - RIZZOLI
Author Jean-Louis Cohen and Guillemette Morel Journel

This broad survey of modernism—the most scintillating creative era in Paris—spans all domains: architecture, art, design, entertainment, fashion, film, literature, photography.

The lives and works of artists in every creative discipline transformed Paris into a crucible of modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. Profiles of eighty-eight influential artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, and personalities—including Gabrielle Chanel, Eileen Gray, Jean Prouvé, Pablo Picasso, Tamara de Lempicka, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Brassaï, Man Ray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Walter Benjamin, Josephine Baker, Jean Renoir, Gertrude Stein, and more—highlight the boundless creative energy and optimism that permeated the City of Light at this key historical juncture. Richly illustrated alphabetical entries with cross-references to related topics are complemented by six thematic essays on cinema, fashion, graphic design, habitation, painting, and urban planning. A portfolio of original contemporary photographs—from the historic center to the suburbs of Paris—reveals traces of modernism in dozens of buildings and their interiors that are rarely open to the public. Paris Souls - RIZZOLI
"The wealth of facts and erudition bring magic to Dirk Velghe's Paris. A place where even tragedy seems less sombre. Anyone who does not already love Paris will fall for it after reading this book. 'Ich bin ein Pariser', as Kennedy might have said." -- Herman Van Rompuy, former president of the European Council In this book, reality always trumps fiction, truth always trumps myth. Get ready for a personal encounter with police inspectors and filles à la cuisse légère, Impressionists and art thieves, collaborators and résistants, Cubists and anarchists, artists' models and terrorists, criminals and executioners. In fascinating and often unknown stories, such as 'The Chanel-Wertheimer Case', 'Lenin's Yellow Jersey' and 'Selling the Eiffel Tower', hundreds of Parisian souls are brought back to life behind the façades, in the passages, and along the avenues and boulevards of the City of Light. In Paris Souls, readers taste the idiosyncratic harvest of someone who, after many seasons in his favorite city, is still enraptured by its fruits. Dirk Velghe recounts facts and stories about the extraordinary people and events that colored Paris, sometimes with paint, sometimes with blood. Histories as only a true Parisian can tell them. Light-hearted but always deeply reasoned, Velghe gives an entirely new twist to the history of Paris. His no-nonsense prose and narrative flair guarantee compelling reading.

Porto - RIZZOLI
Stories from Portugal's Historic Bolhão Market Gabriella Opaz , Sonia Andresson Nolasco

Gabriella Opaz, Sonia Andresson Nolasco, José Avillez (Foreword), Ryan Opaz
(Photographer).

Discover the culinary heart of Northern Portugal through the stories, food, and history of Bolhão.

Bolhão Market's century-old walls are crumbling as its vendors and visitors wait for the restoration that will return it to its former glory. Though the deteriorating conditions have forced many vendors to leave, there are fishwives still singing their seductive pregão, bakers still hawking crusty broa baked in wood burning ovens, and butchers still offering up favos de mel for the city's signature tripe stew. Bolhão still pulses with knowledge earned over generations and the rich culinary heritage of the region.

This book is about those vendors who remain, and their stories are for those who want to know what to do, see, and eat when they visit the North. Porto, nestled between the sea and the esteemed Douro Valley, is the heart of one of Europe's premier--though often overlooked--food destinations. The people of Bolhão embody the spirit and tradition of this enchanting city. Your next culinary adventure starts here!

Sea Pools - RIZZOLI
Sea Pools: 66 Salt Water Sanctuaries from Around the World

Author Chris Romer-Lee

An ode to sea swimming—looking at the architecture, history, and social significance of sea pools.

The sea can be challenging and changeable. Protected from the dangers of currents, crashing waves, and extreme cold, sea pools (also known as tidal or ocean pools) are man made pools that provide a safe space for swimmers to enjoy the benefits of the sea at all states of the tide and weather.

Sea Pools begins with an introduction to sea pools within the history of outdoor swimming, their unique designs and architectural significance, and commentary on the resurgent appreciation for sea swimming in the twenty-first century. Chris Romer-Lee selects 70 of the most beautiful and culturally significant sea pools from around the world, including the 25-meter cliffside Avalon Rock Pool in new South Wales, Australia; the sublime Pozo de las Calcosas in Spain that is shrouded in volcanic rock; and Ireland’s historic Vico Baths, to name but a few. Sea Pools also includes four insightful essays: Nicola Larkin looks to the next generation of ocean pools in her exploration of how we can conserve, protect, and regenerate the coastline; Therese Spruhan testifies to the healing and transformative benefits of ocean swimming; Freya Bromley discusses her odyssey to swim in every sea pool in Britain; and Kevin Fellingham writes on the importance of sea pools in South Africa.

The book is illustrated throughout with beautiful color photography, as well as fascinating archive material to give an insight into the provenance of these vital sanctuaries.
