Signature Houses - RIZZOLI
Signature Houses: Private Homes by Great Italian Designers

Text by Chiara Dal Canto, Photographs by Lorenzo Pennati

This inspiring volume takes readers on a tour of luxurious interiors that showcase the best of Italian design and architecture.
As part of the series dedicated to “Made in Italy” architecture and design (Carlo Scarpa, Piero Portaluppi), this latest book features a stunning collection of interiors by acclaimed Italian designers and architects from the second half of the twentieth century. Each of these exquisite spaces perfectly embodies the designer’s unique creative spirit, encapsulating both the essence of the designer’s personal style and taste with the trends of the era.

The ten projects, all specially photographed for the book, include such names in Italian architecture and design as: Carlo Mollino, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Gae Aulenti, Osvaldo Borsani, Piero and Barnaba Fornasetti, among others. Ranging from residential to office spaces, each of these unique spaces has remained largely unchanged, and decades later they still speak for those who conceived of and inhabited them: Casa Fornasetti provides a unique testimony to the world of Piero Fornasetti, and now that of his son, Barnaba, who carries on his work and brand with strength and innovation; Casa Mollino represents the peak of architect Carlo Mollino’s ideas, beautifully serving as his aesthetic and conceptual legacy; and the vibrant, ironic, colorful Casa Quarestani perfectly sums up the poetic vision of Ettore Sottsass.

This book will be a must have for lovers of bold design and stylish Italian interiors.

Modigliani: A Painter and His Art Dealer - RIZZOLI
Edited by Simonetta Fraquelli and Cécile Girardeau, Author Yaëlle Biro and Simonetta Fraquelli and Cécile Girardeau and Marie-Amélie Senot

Edited with the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, this catalog demonstrates how Modigliani’s partnership with his gallerist Paul Guillaume influenced his painting.

Amedeo Modigliani, a Jewish-Italian painter, arrived in Paris in 1906. His meeting with Constantin Brancusi in 1909 inspired Modigliani to sculpt—almost exclusively—until 1914, when he met art dealer Paul Guillaume. He returned to painting and produced countless portraits from 1914 until his death in 1920. Modigliani painted prominent contemporaries such as Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob, but also unknown models and the women in his life, including writer Béatrice Hastings and painter Jeanne Hébuterne, his partner and the mother of his child. Guillaume encouraged Modigliani, rented him an atelier in Montmartre, promoted his paintings in Parisian art and literary circles and abroad, and bought, sold, and collected more than a hundred of his paintings, fifty drawings, and a dozen sculptures. Guillaume’s writings offer intimate insight into Modigliani, highlighting their rapport and shared interests in African art, literature, and poetry. Modigliani in turn immortalized Guillaume in four portraits. This volume accompanies an exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie (September 20, 2023–January 15, 2024).

Berthe Morisot - RIZZOLI
Author Jean-Dominique Rey, Foreword by Sylvie Patry

A detailed and highly personal account of the life and works of Berthe Morisot, the most influential female impressionist painter.

Berthe Morisot won over the impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, and Renoir. She was the foremost female painter of the impressionist movement and, to quote Apollinaire, “one of the most complete artists of her day.” Underestimated for more than a century, today her works demonstrate how visionary she was, pioneering a new style of painting.

Including correspondence with key members of the impressionist movement, this book focuses on the most important stages of Morisot’s career: her precocious artistic talent as a child, her participation at age twenty-three in the Salon de Paris of 1864, her marriage in 1874 to Eugène Manet and the birth of their daughter, Julie—a frequent subject in Morisot’s paintings—and the expressive freedom of her later works. This intimate portrait of the artist and her work is an essential reference on the impressionists.

George Condo: Humanoids - RIZZOLI
Author Didier Ottinger

George Condo’s unconventional paintings are illuminated in context with his vast range of artistic influences—from Tiepolo to Picasso to Basquiat, and from psychedelic to new wave.

George Condo is renowned for his eclectic mix of artistic influences—from the Old Masters to cubism to pop art. The artist who coined the term “artificial realism” blends imagery and styles from various movements in works that critique contemporary Western culture and its excesses. His paintings and sculptures feature Humanoids—figures that are metaphors of our humanity, magnifying our emotions and revealing our high and low points. For the first time in his own words, Condo reveals the genesis and significance of his distorted creations and unveils previously unseen paintings created during the pandemic and the political turmoil in the United States.

Didier Ottinger examines the career, influences, and works of this unconventional artist who is at once rewriting the history of art and caricaturing the immoderation of the modern world. An exhibition of Condo’s Humanoids at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco opens nearly a quarter century after he created set and costume designs for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

About The Author

Didier Ottinger, general curator of heritage and specialist in modern and contemporary painting, is assistant director of cultural programming at the Centre Pompidou where he curated exhibitions on Edward Hopper (2013), David Hockney (2017), and Georgia O’Keeffe (2022). Exhibitions of his work have been shown in New York, London, Rotterdam, Berlin, Venice, Shanghai, and more. H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover is a philanthropist.
