Paris Moderne: 1914-1945 - RIZZOLI
Author Jean-Louis Cohen and Guillemette Morel Journel

This broad survey of modernism—the most scintillating creative era in Paris—spans all domains: architecture, art, design, entertainment, fashion, film, literature, photography.

The lives and works of artists in every creative discipline transformed Paris into a crucible of modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. Profiles of eighty-eight influential artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, and personalities—including Gabrielle Chanel, Eileen Gray, Jean Prouvé, Pablo Picasso, Tamara de Lempicka, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Brassaï, Man Ray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Walter Benjamin, Josephine Baker, Jean Renoir, Gertrude Stein, and more—highlight the boundless creative energy and optimism that permeated the City of Light at this key historical juncture. Richly illustrated alphabetical entries with cross-references to related topics are complemented by six thematic essays on cinema, fashion, graphic design, habitation, painting, and urban planning. A portfolio of original contemporary photographs—from the historic center to the suburbs of Paris—reveals traces of modernism in dozens of buildings and their interiors that are rarely open to the public. This catalog—published to accompany an exhibition at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai in summer 2023—sketches a panorama of human invention across the vast creative landscape of Paris from 1914 to 1945.

Paris Souls - RIZZOLI
"The wealth of facts and erudition bring magic to Dirk Velghe's Paris. A place where even tragedy seems less sombre. Anyone who does not already love Paris will fall for it after reading this book. 'Ich bin ein Pariser', as Kennedy might have said." -- Herman Van Rompuy, former president of the European Council In this book, reality always trumps fiction, truth always trumps myth. Get ready for a personal encounter with police inspectors and filles à la cuisse légère, Impressionists and art thieves, collaborators and résistants, Cubists and anarchists, artists' models and terrorists, criminals and executioners. In fascinating and often unknown stories, such as 'The Chanel-Wertheimer Case', 'Lenin's Yellow Jersey' and 'Selling the Eiffel Tower', hundreds of Parisian souls are brought back to life behind the façades, in the passages, and along the avenues and boulevards of the City of Light. In Paris Souls, readers taste the idiosyncratic harvest of someone who, after many seasons in his favorite city, is still enraptured by its fruits. Dirk Velghe recounts facts and stories about the extraordinary people and events that colored Paris, sometimes with paint, sometimes with blood. Histories as only a true Parisian can tell them. Light-hearted but always deeply reasoned, Velghe gives an entirely new twist to the history of Paris. His no-nonsense prose and narrative flair guarantee compelling reading.

Portal to Lisbon by Kristina Poliakova
Titled "Portal to Lisbon," this painting is the fruit of my travels through Portugal, inspired by the remarkable art of azulejo. Every element on this canvas carries a depth of meaning and a connection to Portuguese history and culture, intertwining into a cohesive composition where even the smallest details hold significance. The central figure of the painting, a woman with hair that flows like gold and forms a crown, symbolizes the power and beauty of Portuguese culture. Her dress, accurately imitating azulejo tiles, reflects the richness and diversity of Portuguese art. In her hands, she holds a peculiar pitcher, the mystery of which captivates attention: what might it contain? This pitcher serves as the painting's Easter egg, inviting the viewer to ponder and seek hidden meanings. The woman's skin is adorned with patterns reminiscent of tattoos, potentially narrating her travels, experiences, and encounters. Her blue eyes, windows to the soul, mirror depth and wisdom, while the pink background with flowers sets the tone for the entire image, transforming it into a magical garden of dreams and possibilities. Above her, a curtain with an azulejo pattern emphasizes the unity and harmony of the composition. The symbolism of the painting is closely linked to elements of Portuguese culture and history. Golden hair signifies wealth and splendor, azulejo represents artistic craftsmanship and beauty, the pitcher symbolizes mystery and intrigue awaiting revelation. The pink background and flowers create an atmosphere of fantasy and dreaminess, while the tattoos on the woman's skin hint at the unique life path of the protagonist. Everyone who views "Portal to Lisbon" is invited on a journey through layers of meaning and symbols, discovering not only the beauty of Portuguese culture but also personal stories hidden in every detail. The quest to find the pitcher in the painting invites the viewer into a game of discovery, where each found element deepens understanding and admiration for the creation.

Portal to Lisbon 2024 Size 150x150

The painting is executed in a mixed media technique, the butterfly effect. Each part can be independent, and when any side is combined, the pattern precisely mirrors the other side.

Stories from Portugal's Historic Bolhão Market Gabriella Opaz , Sonia Andresson Nolasco

Gabriella Opaz, Sonia Andresson Nolasco, José Avillez (Foreword), Ryan Opaz
(Photographer).

Discover the culinary heart of Northern Portugal through the stories, food, and history of Bolhão.

Bolhão Market's century-old walls are crumbling as its vendors and visitors wait for the restoration that will return it to its former glory. Though the deteriorating conditions have forced many vendors to leave, there are fishwives still singing their seductive pregão, bakers still hawking crusty broa baked in wood burning ovens, and butchers still offering up favos de mel for the city's signature tripe stew. Bolhão still pulses with knowledge earned over generations and the rich culinary heritage of the region.

This book is about those vendors who remain, and their stories are for those who want to know what to do, see, and eat when they visit the North. Porto, nestled between the sea and the esteemed Douro Valley, is the heart of one of Europe's premier--though often overlooked--food destinations. The people of Bolhão embody the spirit and tradition of this enchanting city. Your next culinary adventure starts here!
